Radio Interview with SABC Channel Africa Radio – Africa Digest
What’s up with apps selling your data and why you should care?
There has been a lot of controversy lately about the way in which consumer data is managed and used. Whilst much of the personal data focus in the past years has centered on theft and compliance– the start of the year has been taken over by headlines around what it means when applications consumers have signed up for suddenly change their terms and conditions.
The reality is, personal data is a commodity for advertisers, and most people do not know how much of their activities are being tracked, let alone what they have agreed to when they sign the T&Cs. Yet every time you interact with a company, they are likely recording that information and connecting it to you. So, the question is are you aware of your data being generated and what are you doing to protect it?
Ilonka Badenhorst, General Manager at the Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association, chats to Samora Mangezi about consumer data and how the public can protect themselves.
