Biography:
Bashi Makhafola is a seasoned ICT and Telecommunications Executive with over 20 years of experience in telecommunications, digital services, Value-Added Services (VAS), and technology leadership. Currently serving as ICT Executive at TIC-IT Telecoms, he leads strategic technology initiatives, digital transformation programmes, cybersecurity, and telecommunications operations. His career includes senior leadership and technical roles at MTN South Africa and Vodacom/Openwave, where he gained extensive experience in messaging systems, mobile content platforms, SMS, MMS, USSD, billing environments, and WASP ecosystem support. His expertise in mobile technologies, digital services governance, compliance, and consumer-focused innovation aligns strongly with WASPA’s mandate of promoting ethical mobile services and responsible industry growth.
Bashi is also driving, both strategically and technically, the Marketplace Gaming Platform project in partnership with the National Heritage Council (NHC). The initiative focuses on preserving and promoting African heritage and indigenous games through mobile technologies, gamification, and digital content innovation, while creating opportunities for youth empowerment, digital entrepreneurship, and local content monetisation. With his strong combination of telecommunications expertise, strategic leadership, and passion for digital innovation, Bashi is well positioned to contribute meaningfully to the growth and advancement of South Africa’s mobile applications and digital content industry through WASPA.
