Membership policy

Who is eligible to apply?

In order to qualify as a member of the organisation, you must be in the business of providing Wireless application services as determined by the Constitution and the WASPA Board upon registration.

Services may include but are not limited to content provision over mobile devices, as well as provision of any facilities that facilitate or enable transport of data over public mobile networks. Content may include information and any commerce-related services.

Membership categories

There are two categories of WASPA membership, each of which pays a different membership fee:

Full membership

To qualify for full membership, it is a pre-requisite to have at least one connection and hence a direct contract with a South African mobile network operator.

An organisation with a connection to a network may not make application for the affiliate category.

Affiliate membership

The affiliate category has been created for information service providers who do not have a direct connection to any of the mobile network operators. If a WASP is paid any revenue for WASP services directly by the networks, then they do not qualify for affiliate membership, and are required to apply for full membership

Affiliate members are not entitled to vote, as determined in clause 7.5 of the Constitution. There are no other differences in the benefits accruing to the two categories.
